Sagittarius 2024
Jupiter, who rules the sign of Sagittarius, is currently heading backwards in the sign of Gemini. He usually stays in each sign for about a year, as he has a cycle of around twelve years. Being the biggest planet, he tends to expand anything he touches, which is why financial astrologers say that Jupiter represents high points in stocks associated with each sign. For example, when Jupiter is in Leo, gold prices tend to be high. Now that he is in Gemini it could suggest, for example, that communications companies, podcasts and X are doing well. Although maybe not when Jupiter is backing up or working with Saturn which he is doing now. A retrograde usually means having to go back and re-examine at an issue. However, I am not a financial astrologer, so you need one of those if you are interested in investments. (See below)
Too many judges
Jupiter can hint at too much of something, and in Gemini this suggests too much talking, too many ideas and too many opinions! As Jupiter is a judge, this means we have a lot of judgement coming from everyone, probably even you! And definitely me. There is a lot of metaphorical shouting going on on social media, with very arrogant (a good negative Saggi word) pontificating.
Actual judges have been in the media spotlight too. In the UK, they are now involved in the possible new assisted dying law. There is a way to go, however MPs have voted in favour of this bill. This would mean that a high court judge has to give the green light to any decisions. I wonder if this is wise on such an emotional and private topic. Is the law the answer here? Are judges better than the rest of us at doing the right thing?
And of course, in the US, there are pardons being issued on both sides of the aisle, for all kinds of transgressions against the law, even ones that haven’t been filed yet!
Censorship
Here in the Netherlands, judges are being harsh on tweets not approved by the mainstream. This is causing a lot of hostility in the free speech arena. The way this is working is that opinions are hardening. In some cases, long-held opinions are suddenly being changed without explanation. Cabinet opinions on Ukraine have suddenly changed course. Jupiter in Gemini can be ‘too much political debate and no action!’ And with Jupiter retro, we are going back over the same old ground. I’m afraid we might all have to suffer from that until early February 2025, when Jupiter moves forward again. Later in the year, in June, Jupiter will enter Cancer β more of that when we get there.
Fear mongering
Jupiter is also about politics, and many politicians are spreading fearful rhetoric in the ethers from on high. Our very own Mark Rutte, now head of NATO, is suggesting we should all be on a war-footing. And our government, who have been advocating digital currencies and getting rid of cash, are now suggesting we keep cash under our beds! As well as having stocks of water, matches and food, although not necessarily under our beds. Gemini is a very changeable sign.
According to many, we will all be blown to smithereens by nuclear weapons, and there is more doom and gloom to come. We should be frightened and listen to what our government advises. I am not saying we should be naΓ―ve about real dangers β mostly because of what leaders are doing β but a good Jupiter would be a wise judge who actually makes strategies to stop threats, and values the joys of life. In essence, he is a very positive, optimistic god, and at the moment he also has many good ideas!
Becoming our own judge
I think, as I have said before, that we need to develop our own skills when it comes to judgement. We all have basic beliefs, which are shown by Jupiter placements in our own horoscopes, and we need to live our own philosophies. This is not as easy as it sounds. We are often coerced by others for myriad reasons, such as wanting to belong. That leads to unhappiness, and if it goes on too long it can make us ill. While Jupiter travels through each sign, we, of course, need to live under the current ‘zeitgeist’ of beliefs and make positive use of, in this case, Jupiter’s journey through Gemini, while not abandoning our principles. Some signs will be easier for each of us than other signs.
Gemini favours discussion
Those of you who believe in talking things out, might find this Jupiter time better than others. The solution to all the opposing views at the moment is not only talking, but especially listening, and fostering true discussion. That is the antidote to too many viewpoints. Listening to a lot of different ideas, and then distilling them into your own norms and values, is a process that takes time and requires thought β another Gemini characteristic.
Luigi divided opinions
The murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, has divided opinions on many issues. His killer, Luigi Mangione, has awoken both admiration and disgust. Speculation and judgement on his motives are rife. And there are different legal opinions at federal and state levels, as to the charges to be brought, ranging from first-degree murder, second-degree murder, terrorism, and carrying of firearms, to fake IDs. Some think that the fact that the victim was ‘important’, means that harsher charges may be brought.
Different opinion pieces have discussed how white male perpetrators are treated very differently from black ones, with more background information given on white men, so we can understand them better. We know a lot about Mangione’s background already. His mother was quoted as saying “it might be something that I could see him doing”. His friends, however, thought he was normal, except for his back pain, and couldn’t imagine him hurting anyone.
The astrology of Luigi Mangione
Opinions all around. So what was going on astrologically at the moment of the attack? And can Mangione’s horoscope throw light on his motive? Many astrologers have opinions on that too! So I might as well add to the list.
Although the murder moment is horrifying, the horoscope of it is interesting. Jupiter was in Gemini, and retrograde as described above. It was exactly opposite a retrograde Mercury in Sagittarius, so the signature of this moment doubly highlights the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius. Mercury was next to the Sun which was about to rise. There are other aspects in this chart of course, but this one stands out for me. I would translate this as a political statement on greedy, arrogant, leadership. And since both planets are retrograde, I would suggest that this was going over old ground for Mangione. He has thought about it for some time.
Luigi Mangione himself
We don’t have a birth time for Mangione, however we do have a date.
Looking at his Sun, which I use to describe his vocation, he is a Taurus with a Mars flavour. This adds to his fiery Aries planets, making him a kind of warrior figure, with a touch of Robin Hood. He is someone who takes practical action when angry. Chiron opposite this Sun and Mars suggests he has a wounded body, and he is angry or frustrated by this. Mangione had an injury that gives him terrible back pain, so I think this is part of his motivation for expressing hatred towards authority figures.
Chiron is the archetype of the wounded healer. I think this is his calling – to initiate the healing of a broken system. His Sun picks up Uranus which adds to his radical nature (and also his intelligence.) He fights for, and values, truth and fairness for all. He says himself: “It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.βΒ I can understand why some find him a hero.
Luigi the Taurus
Taurus is a sign that is interested in financial issues, he is outraged that health companies make money from the suffering of others. He mentioned immense profits in his manifesto. His own Jupiter is in the sign of Pisces, so he has compassion for others and probably believes in helping victims. Venus in Aries picking up Pluto makes him a passionate, you could say deadly, fighter for a cause. He wants to initiate change, and could probably envisage only one way to do this.
And not to forget Ceres
Lastly, his Ceres profile, which includes Saturn, Neptune and Pluto, suggests someone who, out of compassion for underdogs and victims, will take drastic steps to fight against the abuse of power. Much more could be said about his horoscope. However, this brief overview hopefully paints a picture of what drove him to commit such a terrible act. Although I can understand it, it is tragic for anyone involved, including Luigi himself.
Brian Thompson
We hear less about the victim in this crime than the perpetrator. As always, the astrological synastry between victim and killer is fascinating. Thompson was a Cancer with the same Jupiter in Pisces as Mangione. So in an ideal world, he was someone who could have had compassion. Especially as Jupiter and Ceres were together. Although it is impossible to know through astrology how this works, it could have manifested as infinite greed. Or as having been completely out of touch with his clients. In any event, Mangione’s Sun-Mars in Taurus was triggered by this Pisces energy in Thompson. Perhaps allegations of fraud carried out by the CEO could have added to Mangione’s motivation. Thompson’s North Node is also involved here. Perhaps karma plays a role!
Symbolically interesting, is that Mangione’s Pluto (death) falls exactly on Thompson’s Neptune (victim). There are many other connections that astrologers can contemplate, however I just will mention one last thing that probably aggravated Mangione. That is Thompson’s Mars in Leo, which is in very close aspect to Mangione’s Mercury. This can come across as a way of operating that is entitled and privileged. I wrote on Mars in Leo in my Leo 2024 post.
A word on education
On another note, Gemini is a sign that is curious. It fosters learning, so schools and universities need to take note of what is happening in the world. Currently, there is something more akin to indoctrination, rather than true teaching. Educational institutions need to stop being afraid of new technology and teach how to make positive use of it. Taking away phones in class in one way to try to stop the influence of social media. However, it would be better to teach kids strategies for positive social media use and, for example, to benefit from ChatGPT and AI in discerning, beneficial ways. New technology is not going to disappear, so better to embrace it for good, and to foster discussion and critical thinking. Let’s face it β it’s difficult to know what to believe these days.
Push-back on others convictions
Jupiter in Gemini highlights philosophies coming down from on high. There is now push-back on the amount of ‘wokeness’ in schools. Medical schools are not embracing all that is known about the difference between men’s and women’s bodies. And there is also still not enough emphasis in medical training on what we now know about food and its importance in healing. You only need to look at most hospital food to know this! And there is still the ‘white coat’ arrogance of many doctors, who don’t appreciate being challenged. Jupiter in Gemini rewards curiosity and discussion of differing opinions. In all scientific endeavours, this is what aids progress. It is not judging and censoring particular ideas. Let’s hope we can be more open to learning from others.

She discusses the Johan Huizinga lecture, where she covered the cardinal virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, restraint, faith, hope, and charity. If leaders act with these values, then they have more success, and it is better for communities. She discusses leaders and measures them against these virtues, but warns: “We shouldn’t use a moral club to convince others of our convictions.”
