Healing rifts – on all levels

Aries 2023

Aries and Mars go together as sign and planet very well. So since we are in Aries time, Mars is on the agenda. He was in Gemini for a long time recently. He usually spends about 1.5 to 2 months in a sign, however due to retrograde motion, he stayed in Gemini from August 2022 until March 2023. Now, he will scoot through Cancer and leave there for the warmth of Leo on May 21st this year. So we only have a little while to try to make the best of his sojourn in this emotional sign.

Mars in Gemini

Mars represents the way we fight, the way we defend ourselves and our approach to doing things. In vocational work I use Mars to define your style. The position of your own personal Mars will say a lot about this and about what you do when you are angry. When Mars is in a sign in the sky, then no matter where your personal Mars is, we notice that the whole collective has a particular approach. In Gemini, this suggests a war of words. But now with Mars in Cancer, the wars and fighting have turned more emotional. Mars’ sign also shows for what and for whom the collective are prepared to fight.

Cancer – home, family, kids – your tribe

People with Mars in Cancer are fiercely protective of their families and children, and also of their clans and their countries. When Mars is highlighting aggression and unrest, such as in Sudan, Israel and Myanmar, and of course with ongoing conflicts, now is not the time to use logic and reason to counteract these terrible acts. An emotional appeal would be the better approach.

Mars in Cancer

Mars is brave, so it is a good time to take on any family disputes. And to defend children. Or to defend your country. The approach that might work is to be honest about feelings. And to stand strong in your own point of view in the areas mentioned. It’s also a good time to put energy into your home and fix things that might be a source of irritation. You need to express Mars and sometimes get angry to clear the air. That doesn’t mean name-calling or aggression. Being clear about what you need is useful, as others then know where they stand. This may not lead to agreement but at least you might have the opportunity to agree to disagree.

Polarised families

Being polarised in our views and not being honest about our own deepest feelings concerning various issues, is causing division in many families. In the Netherlands it is estimated that 1.4 million people have less contact with friends, family and colleagues and many have severed contact altogether, due to topics such as Corona, and political issues, such as climate change. There are many subjects these days where it appears safer to avoid voicing an opinion, rather than expressing how you really think and feel.

We need each other more than ever

A group in the Netherlands, SIRE, has started a campaign to help end polarisation. It is about listening and stopping name-calling, and is called ‘Don’t lose each other when polarisation is close.’ The short video asks “Are you winning a discussion or losing each other?” A link is below (sorry only in Dutch). With Mars in Cancer the time is ripe to be careful about others feelings and to listen. Mars in Cancer at his best is very protective and supportive of family and friends. His approach can be very empathic. We need all the support we can get in this crazy world. So maybe dare to voice how you really feel and try to heal some rifts!

All about me!

Since this is the Aries post I want to say something about myself and my approach. I have Mars in Pisces – my style is to tune in and try to hear the other person. During Corona I did an interview with Frank Clifford at the London School of Astrology. Part 1 is about my approach to client work. (Oh dear that snapshot!)

Part 2 is more for astrologers and explains how I use the horoscope, which I illustrate with one of my client’s charts.

Since I gave my time freely for this interview, Frank, at the London School of Astrology, kindly donated to my chosen charity of Trees for Cities. Since 1993, this group have planted over 1.5 million trees world-wide.

Polarisation

And on a similar theme, I found this a very interesting interview. It is mainly about polarisation in society but the ideas apply at all levels. Giridharadas is talking about his book – it’s quite a long video but worth the watch if you want to do something about healing polarisation rifts.

Quote of the month

“I look upon the whole world as my fatherland, and every war has to me the horror of a family feud.” Helen Keller.

“There are three principles in a man’s being and life, the principle of thought, the principle of speech, and the principle of action. The origin of all conflict between me and my fellow-men is that I do not say what I mean and I don’t do what I say.” Martin Buber.
